A wandering harpist enters a misty mountain wood. Inspired by the eerie beauty, the harpist
begins to play. (Prelude: Waiting) The
mist thickens, then thins, and a beam of sunlight shines on a hidden path
between the trees. A veil of silvery
mist obscured the path's destination.
Intrigued, the harpist stands and begins walking.
Passing through the veil of mist, the harpist is stunned to
see a thickly forested trail leading downwards to a valley and a vale with a
lake. Through bright sunlight, mist
swirls up and around, first revealing, then concealing the fantastic, medieval
realm below. Before starting down the
trail, the harpist tunes the harp and plays an impromptu warming-up
exercise. The music begins to change,
and a light protective ward begins to shimmer around harp and player. (Warding
song)
Halfway down the mountainside, the harpist stops to observe
a cloaked figure moving between meadow and trees, singing. (Within the Green Forest) (lyrics)
As the harpist hesitates along the first street, a helpful
denizen, seeing the instrument, points to a nearby pub where a music
competition is taking place. A harpist there tells a story. (The Harpist and the Duke) (lyrics)
The harpist leaves the pub to wander further into the realm,
which seems to be equally divided between structures and forest. At a thick grove of trees, a series of
colored lights are engaged in an intricate dance. (Faery Interlude)
The harpist stops to talk with other musicians and hears a story about a thief in Faerie. (The Thief & The Dagger of Nye) (lyrics)
A menacing band of pixies blocks the harpist's path and
demands music. A fast song makes them
dance helplessly until they stagger, exhausted, out of the way. (Dance)
Night falls, and the harpist takes shelter behind the locked
gates of a friendly household. A wraith
visits the gate and demands the householder, but cannot get in. (The Wraith)
(lyrics)
The harpist encounters a great winged being that is the
Guardian of the Faerie land of Milara. (Milara)
A friend encountered in Faerie is a muse for wandering
musicians, and inspires a tune. (Michele's Theme)
The harpist enters a beautiful piazza and asks for
permission to play, which is granted.
The free gift of music is rejected, however, and the house attempts to
capture and trap the harpist by offering coin.
(The Harpists' Gift) (lyrics)
A castle of mist floating above the lake becomes solid for
one night every year, and holds a revel.
The harpist is on time to observe the twinkling lights dancing over the
lakeside as the reveling Hall begins to form.
First the builders appear, then the decorator, then a flurry of activity
as the hosts prepare for the revel and the feast. Just as the sun goes down, the Hall is thrown
open and brightly dressed royalty file in.
The revel becomes wilder as the night progresses, with gypsies and wild
fae joining in the dancing and music.
Late into the night, the revelers begin to leave. The Hall begins to fade until nothing is left
in the twilight before dawn but the twinkling, colored lights on the lake,
still dancing. (The Castle on the Lake)
